Kudela and Jessup’s findings are the first to show that red tide foam impacts animals. “Although sea foams are not uncommon, to my knowledge this is the first one linked to a bird mortality event in this way (by acting as a wetting agent), so it does appear to be unique,” says David Caron, a professor of Biology at the University of Southern California, who was not affiliated with the study.
